Probably one of the most traveled racers and cars in the country would have to Balclutha's favourite son Roger Binnema and his 1995 Honda Accord. One of the sports genuine nice guys off the 1320, don't let that fool you coz he will plain whoop your butt on track as I can attest to, and will do it with that Binnema death smile that he walks around with, which makes it really hard to be pissed at him after he's put you on the trailer. Coming toward the end of 4 decades in the sport has taught him every trick in the book and he knows how to use them, but bottom line he's worked away at his combo for longer than most of us have owned our cars to the point now where its not only reliable but stupidly fast.

Roger's combo of choice is not what you would first think once you see the monster 14-71 Rootes supercharger and carbon fibre hat poking out the bonnet, as below it sits not a 500 odd cube big block but a tiny 400 cubic inch AFR headed Dart small block Chev. While by no means a lightweight pro mod style car, the steel bodied Honda consistently drops jaws and has dropped its PB way down to 7.26 at 195mph which is impressive in itself, but more so in the fact that it comes from the screaming small block with a sound like no other. A Rossler Powerglide/9 inch combo helps with the consistency as does Roger's experience behind the wheel of a car he knows like the back of his hand.

Behind Roger is a great team led by wife Tania, crewmen Mike Wilson and Peter Watson, along with fabulous long time support from Cylinder Head Specialists, Engine Reconditioning Services and Balclutha Auto Services. And that support is needed when you're South Island based and larger fields and better racetracks are a pesky ferry ride away. Wild Bunch Wars will see Roger as one of 3 South Island cars in the field, and to be honest, one of the favourites, with good reason too. His record precedes him and his reputation backs that up. I for one look forward to a little payback.
