Russell has been drag racing for about 20 years. He has raced about 15 different cars over that time, including a 1938 Ford coupe, a supercharged HQ Holden police car and a supercharged 540 CI 69 Camaro street car in which he achieved a best of 9.4 at 147 mph during the 2010/11 season.

He then purchased his current Camaro off Steve Milne to put the street cars engine into, but somehow things got carried away. He had an awsome first season in Top Doorslammer. In 2012, he won the 2012 NZDRA Nationals and came third in the NZDRA points series. He was also the IHRA rookie of the year. He didn't quite get a 6 second pass last season, with a 7.038, but its coming!
