Tom Richardson: 1957 Chevrolet
Nothing is more iconic than the classic lines of a tri-five Chevy, and there's not much cooler than one with a massive set of rear tyres stuffed under the back, and a methanol fed blown BBC up front. Oh wait yeah there is .... add all of the already mentioned to the fact that Tom and Peg Richardson's 1957 variant retains all its original lines with no monster wing or inflated wheel arches and you have one of the prettiest race cars around.
Understated in every aspect, yet instantly recognisable as the type of vehicle our grandfather was more likely to have driven the family around in many decades ago, Tom and Peg's 57 is not the first image that comes to mind when you think of a Wild Bunch car, yet it so many ways it defines exactly what a Wild Bunch car is. Steel bodied, street appearing vehicles with monster Nitrous, N/A or Supercharged engines were where the class started and although that ideology remains today, none epitomises it more than the gorgeous 57 which hadn't been seen for over a decade until its recent return.
A stock stroke standard bore 454 resides in the engine bay these days, along with a set of Dart heads and a 14-71 supercharger, backed by a period correct Hayes triple disc clutch and 4 speed Lenco. 40 spline axles out back transfer the power and although the return of the infamous 57 is only in its infancy, having dipped as low as 7.3 previously, Tom's back looking to have a little fun and maybe hurt a few feelings along the way. Infamous? Well just search Tom Richardson wheelstand on almost any form of social media and you will see what I'm talking about in the iconic image captured by Mike Ashton.
Tom first and foremost couldn't do it without Peg, and for anyone who knows the couple will remember back when, it was pretty much only ever Tom and Peg running the car, a feat in itself, but one the handled with a laid back, no stress attitude that defines who they are. Of course anyone with the surname Tynan also had a big influence as they have done for many, along with a myriad of past and present racers. Way back in 1990 Toms home built street driven Corvette dipped as low as 10.0 and at one point Tom and Co even switched from a nitrous motor to a blown motor on the Saturday night after qualifying of a 2 day meeting!! So you see, nothing much phases this likeable Edgecumbe local, and in fact win, lose or draw, Tom's attitude remains the same, one of the sports true gentleman, but as the say - beware the smiling assassin.
