The name Tynan is etched in folklore when it comes to any mention of anything vaguely Wild Bunch related. Not just the 55 or the fact that more cars that I can pretend to remember were built at TRC in Matamata but a certain proverbial beached whale that had no place running as fast as it did on a dragstrip, when the shape and style (of car and driver) offers little in the way of aerodynamic help, it also remains clear in our memories. Trevor Tynan's 65 Impala is one thing though and that is iconic, as recognisable as his brothers 55, but to me even cooler in that someone would take its aircraft carrier dimensions and stuff a blown BBC up front and then put the thing in the 7's.

The 65, like most of the original generation of Wild Bunch cars has undergone various transformations and upgrades over the years, but retains its classic lines which make it a fan favourite. After sitting in a shed for the best part of way too long, a plan was hatched a couple years back for another generation of Tynan, in this case David (Chris's son) to partner up with his uncle, and piece together a combo fitting of a car of it's heritage. No Flash Harry million dollar billet block and heads here, in fact a standard production block stretched out to 482 cubes, with a set of iron heads hark back to the car and the class's heritage, the ancient 14-71 Hi Helix, Crower pedal clutch and lever shifted 4 speed Lenco making it not only time and period correct but bad ass to boot. Racing on a limited schedule David has already gone within the width of one of Trevor's rapidly disapearing head hairs from turning in a 7 second timeslip, and with plans afoot to piece together Trevor's 530 cube KB Olds with a nice little set of AJPE heads and manifold, things could get awfully interesting awfully fast. Just who is strapped into the old girl who knows, maybe pop your head inside and if David's booster seat isn't there, well I guess we all know what that means.

G&M Auto Dismantlers, Early Time Motors, Richard Bannister, Grant Longley, Helen Vance and anyone with the name Tynan have, and continue to be instrumental in running the car, and over the last 35 years there has been too many others to list, but one thing is for sure having anyone with the name Tynan strapped into a Wild Bunch car is something super cool and the sport and the class are better for it.
