Mike Wilson: 1969 Ford Capri
Drag Cars come in all shapes and sizes, and from the blue oval stable probably one of the more commonly used is the Ford Capri. Small and compact, in the early days more than one found there way onto a basic set of chassis rails to form the basis of the early funny cars that graced dragstrips both here and across the Tasman. Throughout time most of those early cars have disappeared, but a whole new generation have seen the advantages offered by the two door coupe first built in the 60's. Mike Wilson is one such person, having first purchased his Capri in 2000, it has undergone several chassis and engine combo's and evolved as most drag cars do into the methanol slurping beast you will see trying to twist itself inside out at Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival Wild Bunch Wars.
400 cubes of Dart blocked, AFR headed small block goodness with a nice shiny 871 Rootes supercharger perched on top provide the power while a Rossler Powerglide and Strange 9 inch transfer it to the ground and down the track in the low 8 second zone, although with recent upgrades and a decent racetrack at Masterton Motorplex Jan 4/5, a timeslip starting with a 7 is probably closer than even he thinks. After spending many years watching wife Jo collect more drag racing trophies than he cares to be reminded of, and seeing best mate Roger Binnema accumulate even more, its high time the very likable southerner started a collection of his own.
Along with Jo and Roger, Peter Watson will offer assistance and with companies like Cylinder Head Specialists, Engine Reconditioning Services and Balclutha Auto Services in behind the team, all the stars are aligned for what looks to be a busy weekend for the Wilson and Binnema camps. One thing is for sure though, the racing will be fair and fast and the bench racing just as competitive afterward.
Update: Early season testing has seen Mike break into the 7 second zone at over 170mph at Ruapuna on a less than idea surface, plenty more to come out of this bad boy!
